College Pals

I wanted to create an artwork to show Shelby and Maia as the two best friends that they are. So here they are taking a selfie in their shared college dorm room before each head off on their summer break and the unknown adventures ahead of them. I originally created an artwork like this in 2019 but I’ve made several changes to the characters and dorm room set since then so I thought I would update this artwork with all those changes. I plan on rendering another image from the point of view of the camera phone from this very scene to post on Shelby’s Instagram soon. While creating this scene, I realized Maia’s previous hair model had absolutely no movement morphs so I had to change it to the model you see here. At least I found this out now before I started the novel illustrations… which is one of the reasons I create these promo artworks; to test out my characters and techniques for the novel!

I decided to render this scene with depth of field on to put more focus on the two friends and a little less on all the distracting background. I had to do several spot fixes due to my own mistakes but I was thankfully able to stitch everything together in Photoshop. I then used a few Photoshop actions and adjustment layers to fiddle with the colors and contrast then added a rounded creamy border. That’s about it!
